Clean Water Changes Everything: Borehole Projects in Uganda

Access to clean water transforms entire communities. Learn how VGM’s borehole projects are reducing disease, improving education, and demonstrating Christ’s love in rural Uganda.

Access to clean water is a fundamental human need, yet millions of people in rural Uganda and South Sudan still lack safe drinking water. Women and children walk for miles each day to fetch water from contaminated sources, exposing their families to waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. For these communities, a single borehole can change everything. Vast Grace Missions has made clean water access a cornerstone of its community development work as a Christian NGO in Uganda.

To date, VGM has drilled 16 boreholes across its mission fields, providing thousands of people with access to safe, clean drinking water. Each borehole serves an entire community, reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases and freeing up countless hours previously spent fetching water from distant, contaminated sources. The health impact alone is transformative: cleaner water means fewer sick children, fewer medical expenses, and stronger, healthier communities.

The educational benefits are equally significant. In many rural Ugandan communities, girls are responsible for fetching water, and the time-consuming task often causes them to miss school or drop out entirely. When a borehole is drilled nearby, girls can attend school consistently, improving their educational outcomes and future opportunities. VGM’s borehole projects are thus not only providing clean water but also advancing the cause of education and gender equality in Uganda.

Each borehole also serves as a powerful witness to Christ’s love. When a community receives clean water through a Christian charity, it opens doors for the Gospel. VGM’s church planters and pastors use the borehole as a gathering point for community engagement, sharing the message of living water that Jesus offers. The physical water sustains the body; the spiritual water sustains the soul. This integrated approach to ministry is what makes VGM’s work as an NGO so effective.

The sustainability of each borehole project is carefully planned. VGM establishes water committees within the communities to manage and maintain the boreholes, ensuring they continue to function for years to come. Community members are trained in basic maintenance and repair, and a small contribution system helps fund future repairs. This approach empowers communities to take ownership of their water supply, creating lasting change rather than dependency.

Vast Grace Missions is committed to drilling more boreholes in unreached communities across Uganda and South Sudan. Each borehole costs approximately $5,000 to drill and install — a modest investment that transforms daily life for an entire village. As a registered charity, VGM invites individuals, churches, and organizations to partner in this life-saving work. Clean water changes everything, and your generosity can make it happen.
